I think the closed caseback has little to do with this watch’s slimline-ness or its 3 bar water resistance. For instance, the Lange Saxonia Thin is almost 1mm thinner in terms of case, still 3 bar water-resistant, and lest we forget, has a movement that is actually marginally thicker than the Patrimony’s handwound movement. I think the sole reason that VC has entertained the idea of fitting a solid back on this, is simply because the movement is too small in diameter, and will not be very visually appealing if displayed through a transparent caseback. Very similar logic applies to the modern PP 5196s – the case is big (compared to the OG 96s) and the movement is small, a see-through will be way out of proportion.

Does this model have a free sprung balance? Very beautiful watch, with a lot of class.
