Rolex: Where $50,000 Watches Really Come From

Rolex SA is a Swiss luxury watchmaker. The watch company and its subsidiary Montres Tudor SA design, manufacture, distribute and service wristwatches sold under the Rolex and Tudor brands. Founded by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in London, England in 1905 as Wilsdorf and Davis, Rolex moved its base of operations to Geneva, Switzerland in 1919.

Rolex is the largest single luxury watch brand, producing about 2,000 watches per day. Rolex is owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, a family private trust which does not pay corporate tax.

The Vengeful Engineer says:

I wear a Rolex. Maybe not a real one, but who cares? It performs the same if not better than real swiss watches, and it looks the same. Seems to me that only complete retards buy watches for thousands of dollars. What kind of idiot does that? Hahahaha!

@7:13 That means it is rather luxurious jewlery than anything else. If you are more into technology than bling bling and still want something mechanical, better opt for the Grand Seikos.

I am a big Breitling fan and probably won’t ever buy a Rolex. But, they have a cool history and it is an example excellence in marketing. Lets face it, there are “better” brands like Jaeger-LeCoultre, Patek and maybe IWC/Breitling (B0/B20 series movement models ) but Rolex is just plain awesome their limited outsourcing is impressive.

$50,000? Top 3 most popular Rolex. Odds are if someones got a Rolex on their wrist its one of these.
#1 Datejust- $6.5k
#2 Submariner- $7k
#3 18k Day Date- $35k
GMT, Explorer and Milgauss respectively

Now the pre owned prices are quite affordable. Especially the ones from the mid 90s. Very few watches cost 50k. Your average Patek, Audemars and Vacheron are about 15-25k. Very few people buy/wear $50,000 watches. I guess because I am from Houston not Dubai.
