Greetings, I’m Tim of Govberg and welcome to the world of Jaeger-LeCoultre. Today, I’ll be your guide to the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Classic Large. You can see this stainless steel automatic winding reverso and the entire Jaeger-LeCoultre model line on our website GovbergWatches.com.
The story of this watch starts with a high polished stainless steel logo inset double deployant clasp. The clasp effectively joins with the opposite side of the strap to create a continuous loop such that the watch can’t simply fall off the wrist accidentally while being donned or removed.
It’s paired with a traditional formal watch black monotone stitch rectangular scale alligator leather strap. Alligator on top for durability, soft calf skin on the bottom for supplace against the wrist. As with all Reverso’s, the strap is neatly integrated into the conical lugs such that there is very little daylight showing and creates a very integrated art deco aesthetic running continuously from strap to lugs to case to lugs and then back to the strap to the opposite side. An unbroken loop.
The watch is redolent of art deco accents and classical styling cues. Almost all of them iconic in this model line. The conical rounded tapered lugs, the recto-linear contrast of the horizontal triple codrones carved into the case contrasting strongly with the vertical emphasis of the case.
The watch retains its classical golden section ratio, effectively a mathematical relationship between the length and width of the case that’s aesthetically pleasing and timeless. The watch features an aspect ratio of 45.6mm from lug to lug by 27.4mm from 9 to 3, not including the crown.
This watch has another exceptional dimension, however, despite being automatic winding with a revolving case it’s only 8.5mm thick ensuring it will clear any tight sleeve or formal cuff. The dial, once again inspired by the art deco era as well as the original 1930’s Jaeger, Jaeger-LeCoultre and LeCoultre Reverso’s features a dimpled outboard track and a brushed metallic grain featured transferred arabic numerals flanking a railroad style inner minute track and a rose lathe applied Clous de Paris pattern on the inner dial.
The hands are broad sword style and blued for rich contrast and a splash of color against the cool silver dial. As ever, the reversing case is a signature of the Reverso and you can see that the interior of the carriage is beautified with a tight engine turned prolage pattern.
On the reverse, polished stainless steel, reminiscent of the original reverso’s. The original design featured a solid steel case back such as this to deflect the blows of polo mallets for British officers in India who wanted a solution to the problem of shattered watch crystals during polo play. However, subsequent history has found that the steel case back of a traditional reverso also serves as a superb canvas for personalization by engraving and enameling.
Beneath the solid steel case back sits a Jaeger-LeCoultre manufacture caliper 965. Although traditionally Reverso’s have been manual winding, as of 2016 Jaeger-LeCoultre has dramatically expanded the availability of automatic winding reverso’s increasing the practicality of this classic family of references. It features 197 parts and 30 jewels and a modern 28,800 vibration per hour beat rate. It’s protected by seals within this case featuring over 50 parts that endows the movement with protection up to 3 ATM from splash and rain exposure.
