Why I LOVE Cartier | #ASKTNH 132

Cartier watches have a bad wrap that they don’t (completely) deserve. Have they made shitty watches? Yes. Have they made shitty watches that are absolutely unrelated to their brand? Without question, and they’ve made plenty of terrific watches just as awfully unrelated. But, still, there’s so much to love about this brand. Their history, iconic aesthetic, core values and cultural significance are endlessly interesting and frankly, they don’t get enough credit. So, as a passionate Cartier owner and geek, I dove right in to the intricacies of my appreciation on todays episode.

Comments

Ali Castillo says:

“Carti-yay” you don’t pronounce the R. I sense your love and passion for the brand and if you are, pronounce it correctly.

Ricardo Reis says:

Hey Christian! Do you think A. Lange & Söhne will ever release a sports watch on steel to compete with the Nautilus and the Royal Oak? Should they do it or not? Would it take away the brands identity or could it grow the brand and make it even more a threat to Patek and other top tier brands?

azhawk516 says:

Good video Christian. This has opened my eyes to the virtues of this brand.

Bas Q. says:

My first fine watch was a Cartier Tank which I bought at age 18, there’s something truly special about their designs.

Mitchell Iles says:

Brilliant video! I used to dismiss Cartier when I first started learning about watches and movements. Since then I have read the Jack Forster Cartier book and done plenty of extra reading and really appreciate who they are from a design perspective and would happily own one. One wee note is that I was in Barcelona last weekend and the main Cartier store was quite uninspiring with the new watch options, the sales assistant struggled to understand what I meant by the Cartier crash. However a few doors down is a vintage watch store and I tried a gold Santos and my faith was restored. Great content.

rene rod says:

Helo Christian. What strap maker you have on your Cartier Santos Dumont? Keep up!

V12 screaming says:

Just what I need before sleep, thanks for keeping me up, Christian!

MRMichael Lepp says:

what the hell is with the one side of the V in VII on your santos and that crash? Why have I never noticed this before! Is it on all Cartiers??

Watch The Hands says:

The new opening is FIRE.

Patrick berlin says:

what do you think of the new drive? I value your opinion because of your love of Cartier

Drew says:

FINALLY! dont sell it yet, okay? 🙂

Monsieur Fandango says:

Would love to see a new style bracelet from Cartier for my steel Tank, similar to a beads of rice bracelet! The Cartier man is a confident man with good taste and power.

Interstellar Lapis & the CCCP says:

I love the look of Cartier… it’s my favorite box-shaped watch; I also like the JLC Reverso but the Cartier has a better look in my opinion. My biggest problem with Cartier though is the sizing of their watches, it always seems like their watches are either too big or too small. I don’t like the new Santos 100 because Cartier has always been more of a fashion brand in my eyes and the only good reason to oversize a watch for me is if you have an ultra-complicated high end piece like an A. Lange & Sohne or FP. Journe. An over-sized Cartier just feels out of place for me because I’ve always viewed the santos as more of a fashionable piece of jewelry which doubles as a watch more than anything. As for most of their older pieces, for me they wear too small for a man. (at least someone like me who is 187cm tall with relatively large wrists). It’s hard to say what case size would be good for me… I know 40mm is considerably too big and anything below 30mm is too small. I might try to find one in the 35-36mm range though it also needs to have the right thickness to it.

navanidhi deori says:

Hey Christian. I am looking at buying a sporty dress watch. I am currently looking at Cartier Drive and IWC portofino chronograph. Which do you recommend?

Zigzigaaah says:

So why don’t you sell them?

Parmdeep Puri says:

Ali wore Cartier because they paid him to do so. Same reason why Kovalev, abraham… wear a HUBLOT.

Jonathan says:

How big is your wrist?

Roy Roberts says:

Great vid! Loyal Panthere wearer.

Maarten Van brakel says:

Christian, whats the name of the intro song? I really like it

Keekee Fries says:

What do you think of the Ballon Bleu?

xrandolphx says:

I find myself agreeing 100%. Cartier and JLC and strangely, Sinn, are watch brands that I can connect with emotionally.
I also love what you said about Cartier’s case designs. It’s the same reason that Porsche is my favorite car brand. Even though people don’t look twice at a 911, there’s such a strong design heritage there that just gets me every time.

Nicholas says:

Obligatory saute mussel shot 😛

ramonesf2 says:

Reminds me of John Mayer’s letter to IWC

Joseph Jordan says:

I love Cartier. The Tank is one of my favorite watches, though I’ll probably never own one. Theo and Harris should sell some vintage Cartiers. If you could find a good collection, and sell them at a reasonable price, I’d probably bite one of these days. Great video, Christian!

Paul Parker says:

Nailed it

Wojciech Piętka says:

Hi what is the name of that leather strap on your watch? It looks amazing!

MK. Harvey says:

I am guessing a part why I liked Overseas is because of the new metal bracelet.
And much more love for the first aviation wristwatch, santos.

igotnoideawhattoput says:

‘I’m a manually wound kind of guy, I love the feeling waking up in the morning doing that, I love doing it through out the day when I’m bored’. I lol’d so hard.

Also, Cartier men’s watch is underrated. Classic but not sterile or old fashioned.

Angelus Avila says:

I missed the little dance you do in the beginning of the intro. I love my Basculante

No One says:

Anyone know the reference number of that Cartier Santos??

trevor walker says:

Great video, what will I do with all these dive watches that I own…
