SIHH 2019: Cartier Santos de Cartier XL Blue Dial (WSSA0013) Luxury Watch Review

The 2019 SIHH launch of the Cartier Santos de Cartier Large perfects Cartier’s most successful model launch of 2018. The Santos XL with blue degrade dial stuns in person; the sunburst blue fades to black as on a Patek Philippe Nautilus. All Roman numerals are appliqués with mirrored polish, and for the first time, this generation of the Cartier Santos XL gains a set of luminescent hands for legibility at night.

Cartier’s QuickSwitch and SmartLink continued to permit tool-free swapping of straps and sizing of bracelets. For good measure, Cartier includes both a blue leather strap and the stainless steel bracelet at no additional cost.

Inside the Santos case, the Cartier caliber MC 1904-PS keeps the time. Twin mainspring barrels ensure isochronous operation regardless of wind state, and the movement boasts a 48-hour power reserve. Hacking seconds (stop seconds), a quickset date, and a modern beat rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour round out the specifications of this Cartier in-house movement.

2019 Cartier Santos XL blue dial is encased in 39.8mm of stainless steel surrounding a blue dial on a stainless steel bracelet. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, and date. The Santos XL has a water resistance rating of 100 meters. The watch also measures 9.4mm in thickness and 47.5mm from lug-to-lug.

This is my favourite Cartier of all time. There, I said it.

You are so full of crap and I’ll tell you if I see you at sihh

The older I get, the more I appreciate Cartier.

Claudio Terjanian says:

Already have it in our possession! The watch is a stunner. Good stuff Tim, travel safely.

Am I the only one who thinks lume is useless unless the indices are lumed too?

Blake Taylor says:

This thing is genuinely special… I dig it!

Tom Faranda says:

OllieG Hamster says:

I’m starting to like these Cartiers.

Patrick Daly says:

Didn’t like the initial press shots/renders. But it’s stunning looking here.

City of Gentlemen says:

I don’t know if it’s because the state of my collecting has changed, but when I saw you show this watch last week, I ran to my boutique right away. But in the end I wasn’t wow’d. Love my Hulk and AP RO. And other than my waitlisted Pepsi and some unattainable pieces, nothing is grabbing me.

Adamas says:

What a beauty! I love that Cartier added lume to this one. Makes it a more practical and versatile timepiece.

Jon Andresen says:

Really appreciate the video Tim. I just picked one up and you captured why it’s special. Interestingly, Cartier is rather quiet about what seems to be a fantastic movement. WIS reports indicate outstanding timing; highly precise and very stable. The movement is also effectively antimagnetic and there may be a mu-metal shield. If so, the thinness is all the more remarkable. This watch defines classic but is full of smart high tech and impressively precise manufacturing. Amazing. It’s also exemplar of wearable thickness.

Yi-Hung Tai says:

Nice watch! But still love the white dial over this blue.

Matt says:

Dam how you get this already? Lol

Magic Mike says:

Awesome, I wonder if they’ll release it in two tone also.

Walter White says:

I tried it on a couple weeks ago at Cartier but ultimately walked out with the white-face Santos XL. I thought it looked OK on my wrist but I loved the way the watch looked on the tray and in the display. Maybe I need to take another look at it again……

jason starek says:

Checks all the boxes. Love it.

A B says:

Much to big to be classy.

CrimFerret says:

I’ve not been a fan of Cartier watches for the most part. That is a nice looking watch and decently priced too from what I could see on Cartier’s site.

Dat Lam says:

I’d like if you put the leather strap on

alex Akb says:

Is it a screw down crown ?

Cranking All Day says:

This watch New mens wrist watches popular!!! Fantastic history

Tom Roman says:

Hi Tim, I’m impressed by this piece, never been a Cartier fan before, but I’m more impressed that you’re in the office / studio today. I’m assuming that Philly got the snow that we in DC got and if so making it to work was quite an achievement. Thanks for your effort and for this review.

Ray Patt says:

I wonder why this Santos does not have the typical “CARTIER” text at the VII marker?

David Datura says:

Fantastic watch! The best new Cartier in a long time. Love that graduated blue dial and metal Roman numerals, and a bit of lume too! A more affordable (and I assume available!) quality alternative to a Nautilus or Royal Oak. Like Tim, my favorite horological introduction of 2019 so far.

Ed Gein says:

Why not just install a clock in your zeppelin?

jumboJetPilot says:

Awesome!

Mohanad Madani says:

I’m not really a fan of cartier or this type of watches but this one is absolutely gorgeous, every single details on this timepeace is done professionally

Peter Sampson says:

THAT LOOKS AWESOME TIM. DO THEY HAVE ANY IN GOLD OR PLATINUM?

Richard Atkinson says:

I love this watch but the fact that the screw heads dont line up bothers me

Alison Smith says:

Cartier = Great design. Classic elegance.

Peter Hoh says:

Go get your fact right, This New Santos never have XL size (Not what you think of Santos 100) , this new Santos 2018 design only comes with MM and LM size. Shame of you of giving out wrong information here….

Michael Wynne says:

Love the watch! I wished you showed it with the blue leather strap it comes with as well…

Bubba B says:

Cartier? So so…
